Apply for courses

Restriction of course application

Starting with application for study period 1 24/25 (which tentatively opens 2/5), a limitation is introduced on how many points you can apply for as follows:

  • Students are limited to apply for a maximum of 30 credits per study period (=60 credits per semester for programs that apply for entire semester).
  • You can register up to the limit, but never exceed it.
  • Courses that span multiple study periods are counted as the number of credits for the course divided by the number of study periods the current course instance covers. The credit portion is only counted at the time of registration and not for subsequent study periods.
  • Theses and re-registration are not included in the limit calculation.
  • Late application is not subject to the limitation.

The decision applies to the programs where the students apply themselves, via LTH's course application system. The restriction is introduced because too many students in recent years have applied for too many courses which they then do not follow. This causes problems for the teachers. Decisions/full refs (in Swedish only).

Most students enrolled in a 2-year international master's programme at LTH will be required to apply for courses twice each semester (semester 4 excluded).

However, there are some exemptions;

  • Students in Digital Architecture and Emergent Futures, Energy-efficient and Environmental Building Design, Industrial Design, FIPDes and IMFSE, do not need to apply for courses at all as these programmes are completely mandatory.
  • Students in Achitecture and Sustainable Urban Design only apply for courses once, before each semester (November and May).

Students must apply for all courses in the programme (including mandatory courses) except the KKK000 and the Degree Project.

All students will, in semester 3, be informed on the specific process to enroll and register for the degree project.

A reminder is sent out to you by email when it is time to apply for courses or enroll in the degree project.

How to apply

You apply for courses at LTH course website:

  1. Click on "Log in for course application"
  2. Sign in with your LU student account

Some courses have entry requirements and/or a limitation in the number of study places. When you apply for a course you can find this information in the course syllabus (a link can be found inside the application system). Admission is given if you fulfil the entry requirements and if there is enough space in the course. If you are admitted to the course you will receive an email.

If you apply for a course after the deadline you will be put on the reserve list for that course.

You can do a late application until the end of week two in the study period, if the course is not already full. You will then be put on a reserve list. Please note that if you apply late you are not guaranteed a place in the course even if it is a mandatory course in your programme.

After week two you can not do an application yourself. In that case you need to contact the international coordinator for your programme.

Please cancel the course in Ladok.

Ladok for students

If you have registered for the course you need to cancel the registration in Ladok within three weeks from the starting date of the course. As a fee-paying student you will be charged for the course if you don’t cancel your registration within these three weeks.

If you haven’t registered for the course it is polite to notify the course coordinator that you will drop the course.

If you do not fulfil the formal entry requirements for a course you wish to study as part of your programme, you may apply for an exemption from entry requirements. This is done by sending an email to dispens@lth.lu.se. An exemption from entry requirements for courses in a programme is decided by the chair of the Education Board at LTH.

In the application, state the following:

  • Your name, personal identity number and the programme you are studying
  • The title of the course you wish to study for which you do not fulfil the entry requirements
  • How you in some way other than through the formal entry requirements consider that you have the prerequisites to benefit from the course.

If your application refers to an exemption from the entry requirements to be able to start writing your degree project, you are also to state how many credits you have earned from completed courses in the programme.

You may state if you have special grounds for the exemption, but the focus for the assessment of your application will always be if you have sufficient prior knowledge to study the course in question.

Any certificate that substantiates the application is to be enclosed as a PDF.

Please note that the following are normally not deemed to constitute grounds for granting an exemption from entry requirements:

  • A certificate from a teaching staff member or examiner that you are ready to write a degree project, even though you lack the credits for qualification
  • An agreement with a company and/or writing partner
  • A missed qualifying exam, even if this is due to causes over which you have no control
  • Documented disability that provides eligibility for learning support
  • A residence permit that is due to expire.

When could there be grounds to apply for exemption from entry requirements?

  • You do not fulfil the formal entry requirements, but have studied another course or courses that you think would make you equally prepared
  • For a degree project: you are not very far from fulfilling all of the entry requirements.

However, this is always subject to individual assessment and the grounds stated above are no guarantee that an exemption will be granted.

An exemption is not granted for a pre-emptive purpose. If you have the opportunity through an assessment to achieve the requirements before the course you wish to study starts, or if you are waiting for the results you need for qualification, you are to delay the application for an exemption until you are sure that it is needed.

Be sure to apply in good time. Processing is carried out promptly, but depending on the complexity of the matter and the number of applications received at the time, you may need to wait 3-6 weeks for a decision.

Questions regarding exemptions are to be sent to Annica Thomsson: annica.thomsson@lth.lu.se.

When to apply

Apply to a course not offered in your programme

If you want to study a course offered in another programme at LTH you need to submit an application to study the course and to include it into your degree. You need to hand in a form during the application period. You can not fill in this form after you have started a course.

Fill in the first part of the form and ask the course responsible teacher to sign it. After that you submit the form to the programme planner.

Access to digital course rooms (Canvas) before you are registered

The fact that you as a student get access to a digital course room (for example in Canvas) does not mean either that you are authorised to take the course, that you have been promised to take the course or that you are registered on the course.

It is only when you are eligible and have been offered a place on the course (if the places are limited) that you can register for the course in Ladok. It is the registration in Ladok that gives you the right to participate in the course's activities and examinations. It is your own responsibility to register for the course as soon as possible.
